A Brief History on Security & Alarm Systems

These days, when people talk about security for their homes, the first thing that comes to mind is a security alarm system. It has become the standard in making sure that your home is safe and protected at all times.

But how did this nifty system come about?

In the early 1900s, the first security systems were developed and sold. The first fire alarm systems were developed by Dr. William Channing, and the first security systems were developed by Unitarian Minister Augustus Pope. Security alarm systems were incredibly expensive, and only the wealthy could afford it. Those who couldn't relied on bells that would signify if someone was opening the door, or anything else that could make a sound. It did not offer too much security, they merely acted as a warning device. As for the security systems that were developed during this time, it was not highly reliable, the alarms were monitored locally and because it was, the effectivity as limited. A lot of false alarms resulted from this and criminals could bypass the security systems with ease.

Between the period of 1930's to 1960's, the alarm system was gradually improved. One of the key improvements made during this time was allowing the security alarms and systems to be remotely monitored. This meant that the user would pay a monthly fee to a monitoring center and the monitoring center hires people to sit, watch for and react to your security alarm and system in the vent that it identifies a threat or reports an issue. This made the alarm system more effective, albeit more expensive to maintain.

These home security alarms developed during this time utilized electrical circuits, with very few changes from the systems created in the mid 19th Century through to the development of digital technology in the 1970s. The first circuits used in home security alarms was developed by electrician Moses Farmer who developed a circuit system to ring the bells that sound a security alarm.

Due to advances to modern technology, a lot has been done to improve these home security systems. These days, it can incorporate fire alarms into your home security system, as well as offer online monitoring.
