Baby Nursery Safety Tips

There is nothing more precious than a new baby. A new baby can bring overwhelming joy to parents and families. Designing a baby nursery is a fun and fulfilling experience, and while making sure that the room looks great is an important factor, keeping your baby safe is even more so.

Here are a few easy tips to ensure that your baby's environment is a safe one.

• When choosing your baby's crib, make sure that it has a safety certification seal of approval and that it is sturdy and well constructed.
• When putting your child to sleep, remove all toys from the crib.
• Where you place the crib is an important factor too - it should near where you sleep and away from windows, heating and air vents.
• Choose your baby's mattress well. For crib mattresses, the firmer the better. It should fit well within the crib, with no room for your baby's limbs to get pinched or trapped.
• Keep drapery or blind cords away from your baby's reach.
• Install window guards to prevent accidents.
• Cover all your unused electrical outlets with plug protectors.
• Be aware of cords from outlets snaking around a baby’s room. Not only are these tripping hazards, they also make the outlets more attractive to your baby.
• Make sure that there are no small parts in the areas that your baby frequents, to ensure that they do not choke on them.
• Never leave oil or powder on the changing table. If the child ingests any of these, they can suffocate.
• Loose floor rugs are tripping hazards. Consider replacing these with something more secure.
• Invest in smoke detectors and fire alarms.
